More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Ohne Titel III," an evocative piece from around 1940, deploys a unique combination of abstraction and surrealist undertones. In this painting, Wiener crafts a dream-like landscape dominated by a focused, looming structure in the foreground, which resembles a dark column or a mysterious monolith. Its stark, geometric appearance anchors the image, providing a visual counterpoint to the ethereal softness elsewhere.Above and behind this figure, the sky is a theater of voluptuous, oversized clouds rendered in soothing shades of blue and green, imbuing the scene with a tranquil yet vibrant atmosphere. The clouds meander across a layered horizon of pastel hues, including delicate pinks and blues, suggesting either dawn or dusk. The interaction between the serene sky and the austere architectural element creates a dramatic yet harmonious dichotomy. This composition, while simple in its constituent elements, is rich in emotional depth, intimating themes of isolation, contemplation, and the profound mystery of the natural world juxtaposed against human-made constructs. "Ohne Titel III" invites viewers to delve into their own interpretations, making it a captivating piece for contemplation and discussion.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
