More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's "Weibliches Porträt" from 1928 is a striking example of early 20th-century portrait painting which encapsulates the essence of the era through the artist's use of color and form. This painting portrays a woman's profile with a unique combination of realism and abstraction which was characteristic of the period's evolving artistic styles. The subject is depicted with delicate yet assertive brush strokes, highlighting her prominent features. Her chin is tilted slightly upwards, suggesting a sense of contemplation or resolve. Wiener's use of bold, contrasting colors further enhances the emotional depth of the portrait. The subtle shadows and tints of green and yellow on her skin give the image a vivid sense of life and dimension.Wiener’s technique softly blends the naturalistic portrayal with a more modern, abstract quality, leaving the background minimally detailed to focus on the subject's expression and distinct facial features. Her haircut and the style of her white blouse suggest a modern woman of the 1920s, reflecting the contemporary fashion and femininity of the time. This portrait, while simple in composition, is compelling and speaks to the skill of Karl Wiener as an artist capable of capturing the complexity of human emotion and the subtleties of individual character.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
