More about this artwork

Explore the graceful contours and emotional depth of "Standing Young Woman" by Peter Paul Rubens, a striking illustration that captures the delicate essence of youth and grace. In this artwork, Rubens showcases a young woman, standing, depicted with a gentle downward gaze that conveys a sense of contemplative introspection. Her attire is a lavish display of 17th-century fashion, marked by intricately designed puff sleeves and a tightly cinched waistline that emphasizes the flowing lines of her skirt. The detailed rendering of her clothing highlights Rubens's masterful ability to depict fabric and texture, lending a tactile quality to the drawing. This sketch, possibly a study for a larger painting, illustrates Rubens's skill in portraying human figures with dynamism and vitality. The softness of the red chalk enriches the image, allowing the viewer to feel the artist's hand at work, adding a personal touch to every curve and fold. "Standing Young Woman" is not only a testament to Rubens’s artistry in capturing the subtleties of human expressions and garments but also serves as a window into the styles and societal ideals of his time.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
