More about this artwork

We proudly present an exceptional exhibition featuring the captivating work of the renowned Flemish Baroque artist, Peter Paul Rubens. A highlight of this exhibition is the emotive painting titled "Head of One of the Three Kings – Melchior, The Assyrian King," created around 1618. This work is not only a testament to Rubens' mastery of portraiture but also an intimate glimpse into the rich narrative of the Biblical Magi. The painting portrays Melchior, traditionally known as one of the Three Wise Men or Kings, who visited Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts. In this close-up depiction, Melchior is shown with a thoughtful, almost reverential expression, his eyes looking to the side as if lost in deep contemplation or witnessing a profound event. His dignified beard and the flowing hair frame his face, conveying both wisdom and age, characteristics often associated with the venerable king.Rubens' use of color and light brings Melchior to life, with the warm tones of his red garment and the delicate texturing of his fur-lined cloak suggesting nobility and regal presence. His hands gently holding a gold container, possibly meant to represent the gift of gold he brought to Jesus, emphasizes his role as a bearer of treasures, both material and spiritual. This painting not only showcases Rubens’ skill in capturing human emotion and regality but also invites viewers to reflect on the deeper spiritual and historical dimensions of the Christmas story. It is a profound piece that continues to resonate with audiences, allowing a momentary connection across time with a figure steeped in legend and tradition.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
