More about this artwork

Our current exhibit proudly features the evocative 17th-century engraving "Saint Cecilia" by Peter Paul Rubens. In this remarkable artwork, Rubens depicts Cecilia, the patron saint of music, engrossed in playing a pipe organ. Her countenance beams with a divine inspiration, illustrating her devout connection to her faith and music. Complementing Saint Cecilia, two cherubs observe and assist her; one adjusts a sheet of music while the other, perched gracefully, listens intently. This piece mirrors the Baroque era’s rich emphasis on dramatic expression and emotional depth. Rubens' skill in capturing these qualities makes "Saint Cecilia" not only a homage to the saint's legendary musical abilities but also a celebration of spiritual ecstasy and artistic mastery.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
