More about this artwork

Welcome to a display of celestial inspection and moral reflection, expressed through the masterful brush strokes of Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens in "The Great Last Judgement" (circa 1617). This monumental painting presents the dramatic scene of the Last Judgment, a central element of Christian eschatological vision, where souls are judged by Christ at the end of the world. At the center of the composition, Christ sits majestically, draped in luminous red robes, exuding authority and mercy. He is surrounded by a host of saints and angels, each depicted with distinct clarity and emotional intensity. On His right, the blessed ascend gracefully towards heavenly peace, guided by divine light and the comforting presence of angels.Contrastingly, the bottom part of the painting embodies the chaos and despair of the damned as they are herded and tormented by hellish demons. Rubens masterfully portrays the turmoil and emotional intensity of the condemned with his robust and dynamic figures, their muscular forms twisting as they fall into darkness.Rubens' use of color variation beautifully contrasts the ethereal lightness of the saved with the ominous darkness enveloping the damned, emphasizing the stark dichotomy of the painting’s subjects.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
