More about this artwork

"Peace Embracing Plenty" is a captivating oil sketch by the Flemish Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens, created around the period of 1633 to 1634. This artwork beautifully encapsulates Rubens' ability to convey deep allegorical themes through vivid and dynamic compositions. In this painting, Rubens presents the figures of Peace and Plenty in an affectionate embrace, set against a backdrop of classical architecture that adds to the grandeur of the scene. The figure of Peace, draped in a shimmering golden robe, embraces Plenty, who is adorned in a soft, flowing pink gown. Plenty holds a cornucopia, a traditional symbol of abundance and nourishment, overflowing with fruits and grains, which reinforces the allegory of prosperity. The interaction between the figures is tender and intimate, with Peace looking fondly into Plenty's eyes, suggesting not only a union of concepts but also the harmony and prosperity that can flourish in their presence. Rubens' masterful use of color and fluidity of form heightens the emotional and thematic impact of the painting, drawing viewers into a deeper consideration of the values of peace and abundance in society."Peace Embracing Plenty" not only showcases Rubens' skills in composition and allegory but also serves as a reflective piece on the ideals and aspirations of his time.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
