More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the profound emotion and exquisite detail of Peter Paul Rubens' evocative painting, "Christ on the Straw" from 1618. This stirring artwork captures the solemn moment after the Crucifixion, presenting an intensely human portrayal of Christ surrounded by his devoted followers. At the center of the composition, Rubens depicts a life-sized Christ, his body reclining and supported by others, conveying a palpable sense of weight and frailty. His pallor, combined with the visible wounds and streaks of blood, accentuates his mortal suffering and humanity. Christ’s head is gently tilted back, his closed eyes and serene expression highlighting the peace of passing, even amidst evident agony.Around Christ, the expressions and poses of the figures convey a spectrum of grief and devotion. To the left, an older man, likely Saint Joseph of Arimathea, looks on with a pained expression, his eyes filled with sorrow. Next to him, a younger male figure, possibly John the Apostle, gazes upward, his face marked by a look of contemplative sadness. To the right, a lady, very likely Mary Magdalene, is depicted with a downcast gaze, the embodiment of mourning, while another sorrowful female, perhaps the Virgin Mary, supports Christ's arm, her face filled with distress. The color palette Rubens employs intensifies the emotional depth of the scene. The soft, earthy tones and the shadows cast across the figures and the surroundings temper the stark realism of the moment, while the delicate play of light emphasizes the spiritual resonance of the subject matter.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
