More about this artwork

We are delighted to present "Pan Reclining," a remarkable 1610 drawing by the illustrious Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. This artwork beautifully captures the mythical figure Pan, the Greek god of the wild, shepherds, and flocks. Rubens' mastery in art is vividly apparent in the dynamic portrayal of Pan, characterized by his signature robust and muscular form.In this drawing, Pan is depicted in a relaxed pose, adorned with engaging textures that highlight his half-goat, half-human form. His legs, covered with thick, curled fur, taper into distinctly caprine hooves, while his upper body, robust and muscular, exhibits the strength of a pastoral deity. The figure's face, tilted towards the sky, carries an expression of serene repose. Adding to the rich composition, Pan's goat horns and a rustic, pastoral pipe, often symbolizing pastoral music and nature, rest by his side, reinforcing his connection to the wild and rustic life. The backdrop is subtly sketched, leaving Pan as the focal point while providing just enough context to place him in a naturalistic setting. The blending of red chalk used in this artwork adds a warm, earthy tone that complements the theme of natural wilderness and tranquil pastoral life.Rubens' captivating use of line and form not only breathes life into this mythological character but also invites viewers to contemplate the serene grandeur of nature's untamed spirit as embodied by Pan.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
