More about this artwork

"Constantius Appoints Constantine As His Successor" is a compelling oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens, painted in 1622. This artwork, rich in historical narrative and dramatic artistry, depicts a pivotal moment in Roman history, the appointment of Constantine the Great as his father, Constantius Chlorus’s successor. In the painting, Rubens captures the gravity and significance of the moment. Constantius, clad in a stoic red robe, extends his hand towards Constantine, who is dressed in vibrant golden armor symbolizing his military prowess and royal destiny. The drama is heightened by the presence of a magnificent angel swooping down from the sky, underscoring the divine approval and heavenly witness to this succession. The angel’s dynamic movement and ethereal grace bring a celestial aura to the scene, enhancing the sense of a fated and momentous occasion.Kneeling at the feet of Constantius is an elder, possibly representing wisdom or the Roman Senate, acknowledging the legitimacy and necessity of the transition of power. The figures are set against a neutral background that focuses attention on the interaction between the characters, while the brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Rubens’ skill in capturing emotion and movement even in a sketch. This painting not only illustrates a historical event but also evokes the essence of Baroque art—movement, emotion, and drama, all skillfully orchestrated by Rubens to tell a powerful story of political inheritance and divine endorsement.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
