More about this artwork

At the heart of our collection is the remarkable painting "The Triumph of Henry IV," created around 1630 by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. This painting is a vibrant, dynamic portrayal of Henry IV of France, celebrated not just as a monarch but as a symbol of unity after the French Wars of Religion. The scene depicted in the painting bursts with energy and movement. The central figure, presumably King Henry IV, is shown in majestic armor, riding a striking white horse and holding a commanding baton. He is surrounded by a diverse throng of figures which include warriors, noblemen, and common folks, illustrating a diverse society united under his rule.Above the king, an angelic figure flies, holding a laurel crown directly above his head, suggesting divine approval and blessing on his rule. The background features classical architecture, adding a sense of enduring strength and stability, echoing the king’s impact on France.Rubens' use of swirling colors and intricate details draws viewers into this moment of triumph. Each brushstroke conveys the emotions of the scene, from the exuberance of the crowd to the dignified composure of the king. The composition's lively atmosphere and the contrast of colors emphasize the theme of victory and celebration."The Triumph of Henry IV" not only captures a pivotal moment in history but also embodies Rubens’ mastery in blending historical narrative with artistic expression. This painting invites viewers to reflect on the power of leadership and the beauty of unity, resonating with themes that are still relevant today.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
