More about this artwork

"Old Woman and Boy with Candles" is a captivating oil painting by Peter Paul Rubens, dated around 1616-1617. This artwork delves into the theme of age juxtaposed with youth, illuminating not just the canvas, but also the profound connection between the two figures depicted. The painting shows an elderly woman and a young boy, bound together in a quiet, yet intimate moment. The woman, wearing a dark hat and wrapped in a brown robe with a red undergarment, shows a face that carries the marks of age, her expression gentle yet enigmatic. She interacts closely with the boy, who appears in a striking red shirt, his young face turned towards her in a mix of curiosity and concern.Central to the composition is the act of lighting candles, possibly against the encroaching darkness. The woman holds a small candle, the light of which casts warm glows on their faces, intensifying the emotional gravity of the moment. The boy, holding another candle, seems to be learning or assisting in the task.Rubens masterfully employs chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and shadow, to enhance the emotional and physical realism of the scene. The soft illumination not only highlights the features and expressions of the characters but also creates a surrounding atmosphere filled with anticipation and quietude. This painting is a beautiful exploration of human connection across generations, underscored by the simple yet universal act of lighting a candle.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
