More about this artwork

This gripping engraving, titled "Bellerophon Killing the Chimera," exposes viewers to a vibrant and mythological scene by the distinguished Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. Executed with a remarkable precision that captures both movement and emotion, this artwork delves deep into the realms of ancient mythology. At the heart of this dramatic composition, we see Bellerophon, a valiant hero from Greek mythology, mounted on the winged horse Pegasus. Bellerophon is depicted in the throes of battle, leaning forward with a lance in hand, targeting the fierce Chimera. This mythical creature—part lion, goat, and snake—emits a desperate snarl as it recoils from the lethal strike aimed at its neck. The depiction of the Chimera, with its multiple heads and serpent tail, is masterfully rendered to emphasize its ferocity and otherworldly nature.Echoing the violence and danger of the scene, Rubens has subtly incorporated a human skull at the bottom right of the composition, which perhaps serves as a morbid omen of the fate that awaits the defeated Chimera. This artwork is not just a portrayal of a legendary combat but also a vivid expression of Rubens’ mastery in capturing dynamic action and emotion, making it a profound piece that conveys the timeless tales of Greek mythology.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
