More about this artwork

In this opulent scene, a man and a woman, elegantly dressed, are depicted standing close to each other in a garden setting. The man, to the left, wears a large black hat and a luxurious cloak of deep purple satin over a black attire, accessorized with a white ruff and white cuffs. His right hand rests on a walking stick while his left hand holds onto the woman’s hand. The woman, to his right, is arrayed in a black dress with a plunging neckline framed with a white collar, and her sleeves are adorned with lace. She looks down towards a small child at her side. The young boy, wearing a cream-colored gown with a blue sash and a coordinating blue bonnet, reaches up towards the man, seemingly in a gesture of interaction or play. This familial grouping is set against a backdrop of lush greenery and classical statuary, adding a sense of timeless grace. A statue of Venus, suggesting themes of love and beauty, subtly complements the tender family scene. Vibrant splashes of pink from blossoming flowers add vibrancy to the composed setting, while a peacock on the far right introduces a note of exotic elegance.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
