More about this artwork

"The Supper at Emmaus," crafted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1638, captures a pivotal New Testament story with the artist's characteristic dynamism and attention to emotional depth. This painting portrays the moment when the resurrected Jesus reveals himself to two of his disciples in the village of Emmaus. The scene is set in a rustic, dimly lit room, where the figures gather around a modest table laden with food.In the center, Jesus is depicted with an expression of serene revelation as he blesses the bread. His features are calm and his gaze imbued with a gravity that underscores the significance of the moment. To his left, one disciple reacts with a gesture of awe and surprise, his hands raised in a moment of sudden recognition. The other disciple, to Jesus' right, turns toward him, his face reflecting a mix of astonishment and joy, as he too comes to realize the identity of their guest.Adding to the realism and earthly textures Rubens is known for, a servant stands at the right edge of the composition, his expression one of curiosity and confusion, illustrating that the miraculous nature of the event is not immediately apparent to all present. A dog, symbolizing loyalty and domesticity, sits calmly by its master, further grounding the celestial event in everyday life. The setting is rendered with architectural elements that suggest both protection and openness, with archways that guide the viewer’s eye towards the figures and the landscape in the background. This blending of indoor and outdoor elements helps to frame the miraculous within the ordinary, a hallmark of Ruben's approach to biblical narratives.Overall, "The Supper at Emmaus" by Peter Paul Rubens not only depicts a biblical story but does so in a way that bridges the divine and the mundane, inviting the viewer to witness the revelation as if part of the gathered company.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
