More about this artwork

Dive into a realm where myth meets masterpiece with Peter Paul Rubens's enchanting painting, "The Origin of the Milky Way" (1636-1637). This gripping artwork, based on Greco-Roman mythology, visualizes the legendary story behind the creation of our galaxy.Center stage in this dramatic composition is the goddess Hera, enveloped in a radiant aura. As she sits atop a cloud, her regal presence is underscored by her glowing skin against a backdrop of the dark, starlit sky. The painting captures the moment when the infant Hercules, mistakenly brought to Hera by Zeus, nurses so vigorously that he causes an overflow of her divine milk. This overflow sprays across the heavens, creating the Milky Way.Rubens's adept use of vibrant colors and dynamic figures encapsulates a sense of movement and divine chaos. Hera’s grand chariot, guided by the intense gaze of a somnolent figure, adds a grand, almost theatrical element to the scene. The flock of birds in flight further enhances the painting’s dynamic feel, suggesting the swift spread of the milky spray across the galaxy. This masterpiece not only showcases Rubens's command of color and form but also his ability to weave complex narratives into his works.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
