More about this artwork

Artist: Peter Paul Rubens Date: ca. 1632–33Description: "The Coronation of the Virgin" by Peter Paul Rubens is a captivating exemplar of Baroque religious art, illustrating the moment the Virgin Mary is crowned in Heaven. Painted with a mastery of movement and emotion, this work features divinely radiant figures, assembled in a celestial tableau that captures a moment of divine grace. At the center of the composition, the Virgin Mary, draped in a soft, flowing robe, kneels with her hands clasped in prayer and her gaze modestly lowered. Above her, two significant biblical figures - Jesus Christ and God the Father - participate in the coronation. Christ, to the left, extends his arm towards Mary, a gesture that signifies acceptance and blessing. God the Father, robed in golden drapery, mirrors this gesture on the right, completing the sacred ceremony.Beneath this holy trinity, a cluster of cherubs adds a playful yet serene ambiance to the scene. These angelic beings, with their chubby cheeks and joyous expressions, frolic below Mary, enhancing the painting's heavenly aura.Rubens' use of vigorous brushstrokes and a warm palette highlights the spiritual fervor of the scene, capturing the celestial glow with golds and rich earth tones that communicate the divine light present at this sacred event.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
