More about this artwork

Welcome to our latest exhibition feature: "Bauern auf der Alp" (1922) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a vibrant encapsulation of rural life in the Swiss Alps.In this compelling sketch, Kirchner uses energetic, expressive lines to illustrate a scene filled with the rustic charm of alpine life. Several figures, possibly local farmers, are depicted in various postures of daily life, interacting amidst the backdrop of modest alpine homes and the sweeping curves of mountainous terrain. A solitary cow, rendered with loose yet deliberate strokes, anchors the composition in the lower right corner, symbolizing the pastoral lifestyle inherent to the region.Kirchner's use of bold outlines and minimal color—an application of predominantly orange and black—highlights the simplicity and the rugged environment experienced by the inhabitants. Each element in this piece, from the figures to the serene landscape, contributes to an overall sense of community intertwined with nature. This drawing is not just an artistic expression but also a document of the time, reflecting the influence of the place on Kirchner during his stay in the Alps. It invites viewers to ponder on the serene yet hardworking life of the highlanders, emphasizing a harmonious blend of nature and mankind.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
