More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of *Frauenportrait (Erna Schilling), circa 1914-1915*, a captivating piece by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a prodigious figure in the Expressionist movement. This drawing offers a profound insight into Kirchner's unique style and his intimate interactions with his muses and models, particularly Erna Schilling. The artwork portrays a woman’s head and upper torso with angular, lightly sketched lines that create a sense of both depth and immediacy. Erna’s features are rendered with rapid, expressive strokes, indicative of the artist's desire to capture more than mere physical appearance — he seeks to depict her emotional and psychological state. Her downcast gaze and the slight tension in her posture suggest introspection or melancholy, a recurring theme in Kirchner’s portraits which often explored complex human emotions. The background is minimally detailed, drawing all attention to the subject herself. The sketch-like quality of the drawing, with its visible lines and raw simplicity, speaks to the urgency and spontaneity of Kirchner's artistic process.*Frauenportrait (Erna Schilling)* is not just a portrait; it is a narrative, a piece that hints at the inner life of the model, an immersion into the soul through the medium of art. This work invites viewers to ponder the thoughts and feelings of Erna Schilling, exploring the depths beyond the surface. This piece is an exemplary illustration of how emotion and expression are prioritized in Expressionism, making it a valuable part of our exhibition.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
