More about this artwork

"Davos in Winter. Davos in Snow" (1923) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures the arresting beauty and vibrancy of the Swiss Alpine landscape enveloped in the serene quiet of winter. With bold, expressive strokes and a vivacious palette, Kirchner transforms the mountain scenery into a kaleidoscope of colours that transcend traditional representations of winter's starkness. The icy blues and purples of the mountains contrast dramatically with the fiery reds and pinks of the sweeping pine forests, emphasizing the dynamic interplay of light and shadow typically observed during snowy seasons. At the heart of the painting, nestled within this vivid natural drama, lies the town of Davos. Its buildings, painted in lighter hues, depict a gentle human presence amidst the powerful display of nature's elements. The church, prominent in its location and highlighted by its pointed steeple, draws the eye as a focal point of civilization and tranquility within the wild surrounding landscape. The unique style of Kirchner reflects his tendency to infuse emotion and intense color into his landscapes, which are otherwise serene in their snowy composition. This painting not only showcases the beauty of Davos in winter but also exemplifies Kirchner's skill in blending the boundaries between expressionism and the raw power of natural scenes.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
