More about this artwork

"Familie auf der Wiese" (Family in the Meadow), painted by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1922, captures a vivid, expressive scene of familial interaction set against a backdrop of lush greenery. In this vibrant watercolor, Kirchner employs his signature bold lines and dynamic, contrasting colors to create a tableau vibrant with life and activity. The painting portrays a group of figures, presumably a family, gathered in a colorful meadow. The central area shows a man lying on the ground, possibly resting or enjoying the serene environment, while a woman stands over him, engaged in an activity that could be reading or painting. Nearby, children are depicted in various states of play; one appears to be painting, while others are engaging with each other.Kirchner's use of distorted forms and exaggerated colors enhances the emotional intensity of the scene, inviting viewers to sense the joy and casual tranquility of a family day out. Notably, the artist's style here reflects elements of Die Brücke, an artistic group he co-founded, which emphasized raw emotion and the importance of personal expression in art.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
