More about this artwork

"The Anatomy of the Horse" by George Stubbs is a striking example of anatomical art, reflecting the artist’s keen interest in scientific and biological details. This painting presents a horse in an almost skeletal form, vividly detailing its musculature and bone structure. The depiction is highly precise, highlighting various parts of the horse's anatomy, such as the ribs, spine, and the intricate network of muscles covering the frame.Stubbs, known for his exceptional talent in painting animals, especially horses, often merged art with science. This particular work demonstrates his in-depth study and understanding of equine anatomy, which he famously honed by dissecting horses to observe their physical structure. The image captures the horse in a dynamic, yet somewhat subdued, pose with its head turned slightly towards its body. This not only shows multiple anatomical angles but also gives the composition a sense of life and realism, despite the stark revelation of its internal parts.George Stubbs' meticulous approach not only served artists and veterinarians of his time but also continues to impress for its blend of artistic finesse and scientific accuracy. This painting stands out as a masterpiece in the study of equine anatomy, reflecting Stubbs' dedication to portraying animals with both technical precision and aesthetic grace.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
