More about this artwork

This painting by Albert Edelfelt, titled "Miesmalli, Akatemiaharjoitelma" (Male Model, Academy Study) from 1874-1875, depicts a striking portrait of a male model. In this work, you can see a strong application of chiaroscuro—the contrast between light and dark—to emphasize the contours and muscles of the model's upper body. The model is portrayed with his torso bare and is looking upward and to the left, creating a sensation of aspiration or contemplation. The background is subdued, using a dark palette that further highlights the model's physique. Edelfelt's brushwork is evident, with visible strokes that add a textural quality to the depiction of the skin and hair. The realistic rendering of the model’s facial features and body, along with the use of light, draws attention to his muscular form and thoughtful expression, suggesting a blend of physical strength and inner intensity. This piece likely served as a practice work for Edelfelt while studying, aiming to capture human anatomy and emotion effectively—a common practice in academic art training of the period. The personal and almost candid portrayal of the model suggests an intimate study, highlighting Edelfelt’s skill in capturing human subjects with a deep sense of realism and emotional depth.
