More about this artwork

The painting "Two Gentlemen Shooting" by George Stubbs is a vibrant depiction of a pastoral shooting scene, rich in detail and atmosphere. In the foreground, two gentlemen dressed in traditional shooting attire, one taking aim with a raised rifle and the other standing by with a gun at ease, appear engaged in a bird hunting expedition. They are accompanied by three dogs which are attentively watching or responding to the action, illustrating their role in aiding the hunters. The background offers a softly illuminated landscape that stretches into a hazy, distant horizon with a hint of a village or settlement. This setting is dominated by a large, magnificent tree that anchors the composition, adding a sense of grandeur and tranquility to the scene. Above the tree, a lone bird emerges from the foliage, possibly the target of the huntsman’s shot.George Stubbs, renowned for his ability to depict animals with lifelike accuracy, shows his skill not only through the detailed representation of the dogs and the bird but also in capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow across the setting which evokes a particular time of day and mood. This painting not only showcases Stubbs' mastery in animal representations but also his adeptness at capturing human figures and the natural environment, creating a harmonious and dynamic composition that reflects the genteel sporting activities of the era.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
