More about this artwork

The painting "Foxhound" by George Stubbs portrays a single foxhound standing on a grassy overlook, possibly on a hillside, with a scenic backdrop behind it. The dog is depicted in careful detail, with a white and brown coat, including distinctive large brown patches and a brown head. It stands in a poised and alert manner, gazing intently into the distance, which conveys a strong sense of attentiveness or waiting. The landscape in the background consists of a subdued palette of blues and grays, suggesting either early morning or late afternoon. There is a distinct contrast between the misty, soft appearance of the distant landscape and the sharp, detailed rendering of the dog. The looming dark cliff to the left and the broad, light sky further emphasize the solitary and prominent position of the foxhound.George Stubbs, known for his anatomically precise paintings of animals, particularly horses, has managed to capture not only the physical precision of the hound but also a moment of quiet intensity, reflecting the breed's nature and its role in hunting. The expertise of Stubbs in animal anatomy is evident in the muscular definition and natural stance of the foxhound, making the painting resonate with realism and depth.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
