More about this artwork

The painting "A Lion: A Recumbent Lion" by George Stubbs depicts a solitary lion lying down, his body positioned toward the viewer with his head turned to gaze directly out of the canvas. The lion's mane appears full and slightly disheveled, conveying a natural and wild essence. His facial expression is calm yet attentive, and his eyes hold a deep, almost introspective look, suggesting a sense of majesty and introspection. The background and foreground are subtly crafted. The ground beneath the lion is textured and dotted with small stones and a few sprigs of vegetation, which adds detail to the scene without distracting from the main focus, which is the lion himself. The upper portion of the painting is engulfed in darkness, focusing all attention on the lion as the central figure. The overall tone of the painting is serene yet powerful, capturing the essence of a wild creature in a moment of quiet repose. George Stubbs, known for his accurate and detailed animal studies, showcases his skill in rendering animals with anatomical precision and imbuing them with a sense of dignity and presence. This artwork is a fine example of his mastery in portraying the dignified and calm yet potent nature of the lion.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
