More about this artwork

Pierre Bonnard's intimate and evocative painting titled "Woman and Dog at Table" (1908) displays a vibrant snapshot of domestic life that captures the essence of private moments. This artwork features a woman seated at a table with a fluffy, black dog peering out intriguingly beside her. The setting is warm and inviting, as soft light filters through a nearby window, illuminating the room with a creamy, diffused glow. The table is modestly set with what appears to be breakfast items, including plates and a cup. The backdrop of the painting includes a suggestive outline of plants by the windowsill and an indistinct figure in the hallway, adding layers of depth and story to the scene.Bonnard's use of loose, expressive brushstrokes and his mastery of color create a tactile texture and a lively atmosphere. The woman, dressed in a detailed floral garment, interacts gently with the dog, suggesting a moment of quiet companionship and everyday tranquility. This painting not only showcases Bonnard's characteristic luminosity and chromatic richness but also reflects his ongoing fascination with the rhythms and interludes of domestic environments.Through "Woman and Dog at Table," Bonnard invites viewers into a personal, serene moment, frozen in time yet universal in its emotional resonance.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
