More about this artwork

"Figures in a Landscape" (1924) by Alfred Ost is a vibrant and dynamic watercolor painting that captures a moment full of movement and emotional intensity. In this painting, we see a group of figures, predominantly dressed in dark, somber tones, set against a dramatically swirling and abstract sky. The figures appear to be in motion, suggesting a scene of migration or pilgrimage, with some individuals portrayed as carrying belongings or guiding animals, underscoring a sense of journey or displacement. The environment is depicted with broad, expressive strokes, particularly the sky, which is filled with large, swirling forms in shades of grey, brown, and blue, conveying a sense of turmoil or perhaps the elemental forces of nature. The ground is rendered in bright, contrasting colors, with sharp, angular lines that add to the overall sense of unrest and dynamic movement. This bold color palette and the fluid, almost chaotic brushwork enhance the emotional impact of the scene, suggesting themes of struggle, resilience, and the human condition amidst the forces of nature.Alfred Ost's work here is a compelling blend of expressionism and realism, where the emotional expression is achieved through powerful, gestural brushwork and a rich, evocative use of color. The painting invites viewers to contemplate the story and the circumstances of the figures depicted, making it a poignant exploration of human life within the vastness of the landscape.

Alfred Ost was a renowned Belgian painter. In 1920, he garnered a bronze medal in the art competition at the Olympic Games for his exquisite painting titled "The Footballer" (Joueur de Football). Interestingly, that was the year when the Olympic Games expanded to include categories such as painting, architecture, literature, music, and sculpture.

During the challenging times of the Second World War, Alfred faced immense hardships, even running out of essential supplies like food. However, he managed to sustain himself through the help of Jesuit priests from the Xavier College in Antwerp. This help was in return for the religious artwork he contributed.

The Jesuits admired his artwork and provided him the opportunity to create murals across their school. These masterpieces illustrated the life of Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the Jesuit order and the eponymous college. Owing to a wartime scarcity of paints, Alfred resourcefully employed charcoal and charcoal sticks for his work. Later, these murals were preserved with a protective layer, and they continue to be among the school's most treasured possessions to this day.
