The artwork prominently features bold, vibrant strokes and a flurry of colors that give life and motion to the scene. The painting displays a group of people and horses, braving the harsh winter conditions. The characters, heavily bundled in winter garments, are portrayed with exaggerated, swirling lines that emphasize the buffeting winds and the challenging nature of their journey. The horses, similarly adorned in colorful harnesses, appear to trudge forward determinedly, showcasing the strain of moving through the heavy snow. The background is an abstract mélange of gray and white tones, speckled with dashes of multiple colors that suggest falling snowflakes or perhaps the chilling splash of windswept snow. This colorful depiction of snow adds a somewhat festive or lively quality to what could otherwise be a bleak winter scene.Alfred Ost's use of intense colors and dynamic, almost chaotic, line work in "Through the Snow" vividly transports the viewer into the midst of a windy, snowy journey, highlighting both the struggle and the vivid sensations associated with winter travel. The overall effect is energetic, yet there's an undercurrent of endurance and resilience conveyed through the figures’ stoic progress forward.

Alfred Ost was a renowned Belgian painter. In 1920, he garnered a bronze medal in the art competition at the Olympic Games for his exquisite painting titled "The Footballer" (Joueur de Football). Interestingly, that was the year when the Olympic Games expanded to include categories such as painting, architecture, literature, music, and sculpture.

During the challenging times of the Second World War, Alfred faced immense hardships, even running out of essential supplies like food. However, he managed to sustain himself through the help of Jesuit priests from the Xavier College in Antwerp. This help was in return for the religious artwork he contributed.

The Jesuits admired his artwork and provided him the opportunity to create murals across their school. These masterpieces illustrated the life of Francis Xavier, the patron saint of the Jesuit order and the eponymous college. Owing to a wartime scarcity of paints, Alfred resourcefully employed charcoal and charcoal sticks for his work. Later, these murals were preserved with a protective layer, and they continue to be among the school's most treasured possessions to this day.
