More about this artwork

Oscar-Claude Monet, a pioneer of Impressionism, captures a misty, ethereal scene of the Houses of Parliament in London in his painting titled "Houses of Parliament, London (1900)." This artwork is part of a famous series in which Monet explored the effects of light and color through various times of the day and weather conditions. In this particular painting, Monet presents a view shrouded in haze, with the iconic architecture of the Houses of Parliament almost dissolving into the swirling, luminous fog. The colors are predominantly soft blues, grays, and hints of lavender, suggesting either an early morning or late evening setting where the light gently plays with the forms. This blending of colors not only evokes a sense of tranquility but also Monet's fascination with atmospheric conditions around this famed British landmark. The reflection in the water adds a fluid, almost dreamlike quality to the scene, further emphasizing the impressionist's aim to capture fleeting moments in time rather than concrete reality. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, typical of Monet’s style, allowing viewers to engage with the scene emotionally rather than through a detailed, literal depiction.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
