More about this artwork
The painting titled "Two Hands Raised In Front Of Clouds" by Leo Gestel is an evocative piece rendered with a focus on simplicity and delicate shading that enhances its emotional depth. The artwork features the central image of two upward-reaching hands, which are detailed with fine, expressive lines that convey both texture and movement. The hands are set against a backdrop of horizontally streaked clouds, executed in a more subdued manner, providing a soft contrast to the detailed sharpness of the hands. The positioning and gesture of the hands might suggest a sense of yearning or supplication, as they are raised upwards as though reaching toward something beyond the picture frame. The clouds offer a dreamy and ethereal atmosphere, possibly alluding to themes of hope, spiritual longing, or a connection with the transcendent.Overall, Gestel's use of monochromatic tones and his control of line work come together to create a striking visual narrative that is open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to contemplate the deeper emotional or spiritual resonances of the image.

Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch visual artist, painter, and illustrator. His father was a director of an art school and his uncle painted with the famous Vincent van Gogh. He came across the Parisian avant-garde movement and developed his eclectic style through experimentation with various art forms including cubism, expressionism, futurism, and post-impressionism. He is considered one of the leading Dutch modernism artists, along with Piet Mondrian. The majority of Gestel’s work was lost in a fire.
