More about this artwork

The painting "Soria Moria" by Alfred William Finch presents a fascinating landscape rendered with delicate, expressive lines. In the scene, the composition appears to be split into foreground elements defined by the imposing, dark forms of trees on either side, which channel the viewer's gaze into the center of the image. These trees frame a hilly landscape dotted with clouds or mist, possibly indicating an expansive valley or vast open space. In the middle background of the painting, the eye is drawn towards a luminous, fairy-tale castle on a distant hilltop, bathed in light, emanating an ethereal and somewhat unattainable allure. This castle, known as Soria Moria Castle, is a subject that recurs in Norwegian folklore and symbolizes the quest for a distant goal or a dream. In the lower part of the foreground, a figure stands prominently with a staff in hand, while two other figures sit on the ground. These characters seem to be travelers or wanderers who have paused to either rest or admire the distant castle. The positioning and posture of these figures suggest a narrative of journey and aspiration, as they gaze towards the castle, their possible destination or objective.Overall, the artwork has a dreamlike quality, with its sketch-like rendering and the magical presence of the castle. It invites the viewer into a narrative of adventure, exploration, and the pursuit of dreams, all woven into a rather mystical landscape setting.

Alfred William Finch (1854-1930) was a Neo-Impressionist artist born to British parents in Brussels, Belgium. His works utilized the color palette and Pointillism technique, which were shared by other significant figures of the Neo-Impressionism movement, including Paul Signac, Camille Pissarro, and Georges Seurat. Finch was among the founding members of Les XX (Les Vingt), a group of twenty artists based in Brussels that challenged antiquated and conservative artistic traditions and academism. The group held annual art exhibitions, greatly influencing the development of Neo-Impressionism. In his later years, Alfred William Finch also produced ceramics and pottery, decorated with a fusion of his familiar Neo-Impressionism, Arts and Crafts, and Belgian Art Nouveau styles. His artworks primarily portray the atmospheric beauty of nature and the countryside along the Channel coast. Alfred William Finch spent the majority of his artistic career in Helsinki, where he passed away in 1930.
