More about this artwork

"Landscape with Rainbow" (1861) by Barbara Bodichon is an ethereal depiction that captures a serene moment in nature with a vibrant rainbow arcing gracefully across the sky. This watercolor painting presents a subtle yet expansive landscape beneath a sweeping rainbow, where the broad strokes of cool blue and gray suggest the tranquil surface of a body of water stretching into the horizon. The foreground is softly delineated, inviting the viewer to focus on the rainbow's brilliant spectrum of colors, from deep red to lush green and vivid yellow, each hue bleeding softly into the next.Bodichon’s composition and use of watercolors give the scene a dreamlike quality, with the colors gently fading into the paper, reflecting the ephemeral nature of rainbows. A faint depiction of what might be distant trees or structures adds a sense of scale and mystery, encouraging onlookers to ponder what might lie beyond this peaceful slice of landscape.

Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (8 April 1827 – 11 June 1891) was an English educationalist and artist, and a leading mid-19th-century feminist and women's rights activist.

Bodichon studied at the Ladies' College in Bedford Square founded in London, England in 1849. Here she was given instruction for work as a professional artist rather than an art instructor. Bodichon came from a liberal Unitarian family with a private income. Their independent wealth gave Bodichon more freedom to grow as an artist.
