More about this artwork

"Adder's Tongue From The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones is an enchanting and symbolic painting in a circular format. The artwork features two central figures, a nude man and woman, captured in a moment of what seems like quiet intimacy or conversation. The woman, seemingly whispering to the man, draws him close with a gentle touch, suggesting a narrative of trust and companionship.Adding a mystical element to the scene, a third figure, a blue spectral form, appears to their right. This figure could symbolize a supernatural presence or embody an allegorical theme, perhaps echoing themes of temptation or wisdom, akin to figures in traditional Biblical narratives such as the Garden of Eden. The background is lush and densely populated with flora, prominently featuring the Adder’s Tongue plant which is a fern known for its healing properties and distinctive appearance. The setting enhances the mythical or fairy-tale quality of the piece, with rich green tones and dotted bright spots, possibly flowers or fruits, enveloping the figures in a sort of enchanted forest. The overall mood of the painting, with its intimate human interaction and ethereal atmosphere, creates a profound dialogue between the natural world and human emotion, a hallmark in much of Burne-Jones' work. This painting invites contemplation on themes of intimacy, nature, and myth, rendered with delicate artistic detail and rich symbolism.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
