More about this artwork

"Young Girl At A Window" is a serene and intimate portrayal by the American Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt. The painting captures a young girl seated beside a window, subtly hinted by the light and outdoor scene visible in the background. The girl is dressed in a light-colored Victorian dress with a high collar and puffed sleeves, which suggest the fashion of the late 19th century. She dons an elaborate white bonnet adorned with delicate fabric, enhancing her youthful innocence. The girl's expression is contemplative and serene, her gaze directed outward, possibly towards the view beyond the window or lost in thought. Her cheeks are tinted with a hint of pink, bringing a flush of life to her otherwise pensive demeanor. Accompanying her is a small, dark-furred dog who rests comfortably in her lap, its body relaxed and at ease. This companion not only adds a domestic and personal element to the scene but also reinforces the themes of companionship and tranquility.Cassatt's skillful use of light plays a central role in this painting. The natural light that streams in from the window illuminates the girl’s face and the top of her bonnet, creating a soft glow that contrasts with the shadows cast on other parts of her dress.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
