More about this artwork

"Lydia Crocheting in the Garden at Marly" is a delightful and tranquil painting by Mary Cassatt, an American painter known for her portraits and works depicting the lives of women. This painting features Lydia, perhaps a familiar or fictional muse for Cassatt, engaged in the delicate and mindful task of crocheting. She sits comfortably in an ornate garden chair, entirely absorbed in her craft.Lydia is adorned with a wide-brimmed, white bonnet trimmed with soft fabric that both frames her face gracefully and protects her from the sun. Her attire is an elegant blue dress with detailed white trim that adds texture to the composition. The light, skillfully captured by Cassatt, emphasizes the peacefulness of the moment and the play of shadows and highlights on the fabric of Lydia’s clothing. The setting is lush and vibrant, likely a well-tended garden at Marly, which provides a serene and blooming backdrop. Foliage in various shades of green and hints of blooming flowers add depth and vibrancy to the scene. Behind Lydia, to the left of the composition, a structure is partially visible, possibly indicating a greenhouse or a similarly glassed garden building, reflecting Cassatt’s attention to the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The overall composition focuses on quiet concentration and the enjoyment of simple, everyday activities outdoors.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
