More about this artwork

This artwork, attributed to Albrecht Dürer and titled "Knob with Rectangular Center," is a captivating example of Dürer’s experimentation with complex geometric patterns and textures. The central feature of this black-and-white print is a circular motif composed of intricately interwoven designs that create a dense, lace-like texture. This central circle is adorned with a series of interconnected rings and loops that radiate outward, forming an elaborate network of geometric shapes and floral designs. In the very center of the circle is a simple, more starkly designed rectangular shape, which contrasts with the elaborate ornamental work surrounding it. This element anchors the composition, providing a visual and symbolic focal point amid the surrounding complexity. The corners of the composition outside the main circle are embellished with ornate, flowing designs that echo the floral motifs within the circle, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the piece and demonstrating Dürer's skill in harmonizing detailed decorative elements with structured geometric forms. This piece is not only a testament to Dürer’s mastery of printmaking techniques but also highlights his enduring fascination with mathematical proportions and the harmonious balance between art and science. Through this print, Dürer explores the transformative potential of basic shapes expanded into intricate decorations, achieving a balance between complexity and clarity.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
