More about this artwork

Welcome to an exploration of Albrecht Dürer's "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne," a captivating artwork believed to be created around 1519. This painting presents a rich, multi-layered composition centered on the themes of family and sanctity, depicted with the meticulous detail and emotional depth characteristic of Dürer’s oeuvre. The painting illustrates Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, as she envelops her daughter and grandchild in a tender, protectiveness gaze. Anne's presence is dramatic and commanding, draped in a voluminous, textured cloak that captures the light and shadows with stunning realism. Her face, full of contemplative worry, contrasts deeply with the serene expressions of Mary and Jesus, highlighting the generational depth and varied experiences within the holy family.Mary, depicted in a gentle, loving posture, gazes down at the sleeping Christ Child. Her red dress and blue cloak symbolize her purity and divine role, rendered with vibrant colors that bring a warmth to the scene. The sleeping child, a symbol of innocence and the future sacrifice for mankind, completes this sacred trio. His peaceful demeanor juxtaposes with the watchful, slightly anxious eyes of his grandmother, enriching the narrative of protection and foreboding that threads through the portrayal. This artwork not only demonstrates Dürer’s skill in capturing human emotion and divine symbolism but also invites viewers to reflect on the layers of meaning within familial bonds and spiritual heritage.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
