More about this artwork

We are delighted to present a captivating piece by one of the most significant artists of the Northern Renaissance, Albrecht Dürer. This exceptional portrait, titled "Frederick III, Elector of Saxony," painted between 1526 and 1550, showcases Dürer’s masterful ability to capture detail and personality. The painting portrays Frederick III, also known as Frederick the Wise, who played a crucial role during the early years of the Reformation. In this portrait, Dürer captures the dignity and solemnity befitting a man of Frederick's status. The Elector is depicted with a dense beard and a discerning gaze that seems to reflect both his wisdom and the weight of his responsibilities.Frederick’s attire in the painting is simple, yet rich in detail, with a finely embroidered collar underneath a fur-lined robe, suggesting his noble status without ostentation. The hat, a large beret, is both a fashionable and regal accessory that adds to the overall gravity of the portrait.Characteristic of Dürer’s work, the attention to detail extends beyond the subject to include the geometric patterns and insignias in the background, which subtly complement the subject's prominence. The artist's famous monogram is also visible, lending authenticity to this important work. This portrait not only serves as an invaluable artistic treasure but also as a significant historic document, reflecting the sophisticated court culture of the 16th century and the political complexities of the time.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
