More about this artwork

The painting "Portrait of Bernhart von Reesen" from 1521 is an insightful creation by the esteemed Northern Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. This artwork, characterized by its impressive detail and rich portrayal, captures the likeness of Bernhart von Reesen, a figure historically obscure but vividly brought to life through Dürer's skilled brushwork. In the portrait, von Reesen is depicted from the chest upwards, dressed in a dark fur-trimmed coat over a simple, finely ruffled white shirt. His facial expression is introspective and slightly aloof, mirroring the humanistic focus on individual personality and emotion that typified Renaissance art. His gaze meets the viewer's, creating an engaging encounter. Dürer’s meticulous attention to texture is evident in the soft, detailed rendering of von Reesen's skin and the luxurious fur of his coat.Adding to the portrait's intrigue, von Reesen holds a piece of paper—perhaps a letter or a missive—which hints at his possible role in commerce or governance, roles often associated with such documents in portraits of this period. This element not only serves as a symbol of his social or professional standing but also adds a layer of narrative to the portrait. Set against a flat, vibrant red background, the subject is starkly foregrounded, drawing all attention to his contemplative demeanor and elegant attire.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
