More about this artwork

Painted in 1895, "Les Bords De La Touques Pendant Les Grandes Marées" is a luminous and atmospheric depiction of the Touques River area in France, captured by the eminent French artist Eugène Boudin. Known for his pivotal role in the development of Impressionism, Boudin's mastery in portraying light and sky is evident in this serene landscape. The painting shows a tranquil scene along the riverbanks during a high tide ("grandes marées"). Soft, expansive skies dominate the canvas, suggesting the fleeting, changeable conditions of light which are typical of Boudin's works. Below the sky, the gentle waters of the Touques stretch out, reflecting the sky's overcast hues and surrounded by lush greenery.Small human figures can be seen in the distance, engaged in their daily activities, giving the landscape a sense of life and scale. Furthermore, architectural structures like homes and perhaps a church spire subtly emerge amidst the horizon, connecting the natural environment with human habitation, thereby presenting a harmonious coexistence.Eugène Boudin’s aptitude for capturing atmospheric conditions, and his delicate brushwork that superbly renders the watery surfaces and the lush pastoral land, invite viewers into a quietly compelling moment in nature. This painting not only beautifully depicts a typical Normandy landscape but also epitomizes Boudin’s impact on the Impressionist movement, influencing artists like Claude Monet with his truthful representation of the outdoors and natural light.

Eugène Louis Boudin (12 July 1824 – 8 August 1898) was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. His pastels, summary and economic, garnered the splendid eulogy of Baudelaire; and Corot called him the "King of the skies".
