More about this artwork

The image depicts a highly detailed and symmetric snowflake with an intricate pattern, spotlighting the unique beauty of nature’s creations under the lens of Wilson Bentley. Bentley was celebrated for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes and focusing on their individual characteristics. In this artwork titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 562," Bentley has captured a single snowflake characterized by its hexagonal shape which mirrors the natural molecular structure of ice. The design presents a central hexagon boasting intricate patterns resembling a star or a flower, surrounded by six larger, similarly shaped segments with varied detailed motifs that involve delicate, branching lines, designs that seem almost etched into the crystal structure itself. The black background enhances the snowflake’s visibility and complexity, highlighting its delicate beauty and geometric perfection. Bentley’s meticulous work not only showcases the aesthetic splendor of snowflakes but also underscores his passion for documenting and discovering the scientific nuances of each tiny ice crystal he photographed. His photography revolutionized the way we understand snow and ice, featuring aspects such as symmetry, design, and uniqueness of each snowflake, encapsulating a magical yet fleeting natural phenomenon.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
