More about this artwork

This image captures the remarkable symmetry and intricate detail of a snowflake, famously photographed by Wilson Bentley. Known for his pioneering work in photomicrography of snow crystals, Bentley's image here (titled "Snowflake 1205") showcases the unique six-fold symmetry that is a hallmark of snowflake structures. The snowflake features a complex yet harmoniously balanced geometric pattern with a central hexagonal shape surrounded by elaborately shaped branches. Each branch appears to mimic the overall hexagonal form, reinforcing the natural fractal-like repetition found in ice crystals. The image’s contrasting black and white tones emphasize the delicate and transient beauty of the snowflake, highlighting the fine details that differentiate one snowflake from another. Bentley's work not only offers a scientific documentation of snowflake forms but also serves as a testament to the naturally occurring art found in the winter landscape.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
