Modigliani's use of fluid, minimal lines imparts both grace and a sense of tranquility, emphasizing the curves and posture of the nude model. The artwork does not delve into detailed facial features but rather focuses on the overall form, using soft, sparse strokes that suggest rather than define. This approach draws the viewer’s focus to the abstract beauty of the figure’s silhouette. Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
