More about this artwork
In Egon Schiele's "Composition with Three Male Nudes," three abstracted, intertwined male figures are depicted, each sketched in bold, black outlines against a natural-toned background marked by subtle scratches and lines. The figures are contorted into dynamic and expressive poses, creating a complex interplay of limbs and torsos. Each figure appears fluid yet angular, with detailed musculature and exaggerated bodily forms that emphasize movement and tension. The overall composition provokes a sense of both harmony and conflict, as the figures connect with each other yet appear isolated in their individual expressions.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
