More about this artwork
"Aufziehendes Gewitter über dem Chiemsee" by Joseph Wopfner, painted in 1900, is a stunning representation of raw nature's power juxtaposed with human activity. The painting captures a dramatic moment at Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria, as a storm brews in the expansive sky above. The canvas is dominated by an expressive and tumultuous sky, where swaths of grays and dark browns collide with lighter tones, suggesting the uneasy light that often prefaces a storm. Below this moody sky, the lake itself is rendered in reflective silvers and subtle golds, hinting at the residual calm before the impending tempest.Central to the scene is a wooden boat, occupied by several figures. These inhabitants of the boat, dressed in simple rustic attire, appear to go about their tasks, possibly unperturbed by the gathering storm. Their calm demeanor presents a stark contrast to the chaotic skies overhead, and this interplay invites viewers to contemplate the resilience and routine of daily life even in the face of natural disturbances.Joseph Wopfner, renowned for his realistic portrayal of the Bavarian landscape and lifestyle, encapsulates not just a moment but an atmosphere in this painting, inviting a deeper reflection on the human spirit and our interactions with the environment.

Joseph Wopfner was an Austrian painter best known for his depictions of landscapes in the Chiemgau region of Bavaria. His vividly colored paintings, reminiscent work of the Impressionists, were based off of plein-air studies the artist made on location. As a result, there is strong sense of movement and light in the artist’s work. For example, in his painting Fishermen's family on the Chiemsee, he painted a family wading in a lake—emphasizing the light filling the sky and the reflectivity of the water.
