More about this artwork
Titled "Le matin" (The Morning), this evocative artwork by Léon François Comerre captures a serene, yet poignant, morning scene. Done in delicate watercolor and pencil, it represents a moment enveloped in soft light and tender interactions. The central figures—two women and a child—are portrayed in a classical style that harks back to the Romantic period. The composition is gentle and dreamy. One of the women reclines comfortably on the ground, her gaze wistful and directed toward the horizon, perhaps lost in thought or simply enjoying the tranquil morning. The richness of her drapery in shades of pink and lavender adds a touch of warmth to the scene. Beside her, a child, possibly symbolizing the new day, interacts playfully with a billowing cloth held by the second woman, who is depicted in a pose that suggests both engagement and care.Set against a backdrop that hints at a coastal scene, with distant shores barely visible and a vast sky overhead, the tableau evokes themes of renewal and the endless possibilities that a new day holds. The artist's use of light and shadow not only highlights the figures but also contributes to a feeling of quietude and reflection, making "Le matin" a compelling piece in Comerre’s body of work.

Léon François Comerre was a French academic painter, famous for his portraits of beautiful women and Oriental themes.
Comerre was born in Trélon, in the Département du Nord, the son of a schoolteacher. He moved to Lille with his family in 1853. From an early age he showed an interest in art and became a student of Alphonse Colas at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lille, winning a gold medal in 1867. From 1868 a grant from the Département du Nord allowed him to continue his studies in Paris at the famous École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. There he came under the influence of orientalism.
