More about this artwork
Experience the serene and enigmatic allure of "A moonlit landscape, with an inn beside a river" by Aert van der Neer. This remarkable 17th-century painting plunges viewers into a nocturnal panorama where the luminosity of the moon bathes a quiet riverside scene in its gentle silver light. The painting unfolds a night-time vista centering around a rustic inn, with its structure partially obscured by shadow yet pronounced by occasional light touches that define its form. The moon, almost mystical in its presence, casts its reflection on the tranquil river, creating a path of light that divides the composition and guides the eye through the scenery. On either side of the river, trees and vegetation are rendered in deep, moody hues, contributing to the feeling of quiet and solitude. Small human figures, barely discernible, add life to the scene without disturbing its peaceful essence. These figures, along with smoke rising softly from chimneys, suggest the lingering presence of humanity amidst this predominantly untouched natural landscape.Van der Neer's skillful use of light and shadow, his attention to detail in the depiction of natural elements, and the overall atmosphere of calm and contemplation make this painting a captivating piece for any lover of art.

Aert van der Neer, or Aernout or Artus (c. 1603 – 9 November 1677), was a landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, specializing in small night scenes lit only by moonlight and fires, and snowy winter landscapes, both often looking down a canal or river. He was a contemporary of Aelbert Cuyp and Meindert Hobbema, and like the latter he lived and died in comparative obscurity.
