More about this artwork

In the serene composition of "Le Village D’ouistreham," painted by the distinguished French artist Stanislas Lépine circa 1875-80, viewers are transported to a tranquil rural village in France. This artwork encapsulates a delicate balance between nature and civilization, captured through Lépine’s masterful use of subdued yet expressive colors. The painting portrays a lush landscape on the outskirts of the village of Ouistreham. At the heart of the painting, one observes the stately silhouette of the village church, its tower rising gracefully against a soft, overcast sky. This architectural beacon anchors the painting, drawing the viewer's eye amidst the breadth of natural splendor.Foregrounded by a dusty pathway that invites exploration, the scene includes figures going about their daily activities, adding a human element to the tranquility. A woman in traditional attire walks along the path, suggesting the simple, rhythmic flow of village life. Additionally, two figures on bicycles in the background enhance the sense of quiet movement within the painting.Surrounding the path, the fields are lush with greenery and hints of wildflowers, bordered by rows of tall, slender trees that sway subtly under the sky. These natural elements, along with the nuanced sky, showcase Lépine’s skill in capturing light and atmosphere, hallmarks of his style that align with the French Impressionist movement, although he maintained a distinct, personal approach to landscape painting."Le Village D’ouistreham" is not just a visual experience but an emotional journey into the heart of rural France during the late 19th century, reflecting the timeless beauty and tranquility of the French countryside.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
