More about this artwork
Our newest exhibition features the enchanting painting "Summer Dresses, Interior from Seljord" by the celebrated Norwegian artist, Thorvald Erichsen. Painted in 1905, this work offers a unique glimpse into life at the turn of the 20th century in Seljord, Norway.Erichsen, known for his vibrant use of color and intimate indoor scenes, captures a tranquil moment inside a traditional Norwegian home. The focal point of this painting is a series of airy, summer dresses, each hanging gracefully on a wooden beam. These garments, arrayed in shades of white with subtle touches of pink and lavender, suggest a delicate breeze or the gentle sway of a quiet summer's day.To the right, a sunlit window opens to a view of the lush, green outdoors, with hints of a clear blue sky peeking through. The serenity outside contrasts beautifully with the indoor setting, where the soft natural light enhances the texture and colors of the dresses. A barrel and a small knapsack resting on the cottage floor add a rustic charm to the scene, hinting at the everyday life and work of the home's inhabitants.Thorvald Erichsen's painting is not only a celebration of simple, everyday beauty but also an artistic preservation of Norwegian cultural heritage.

Thorvald Erichsen was a Norwegian Post-Impressionist painter; primarily known for landscapes and still lifes.
Thorvald Erichsen was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was the son of Ernst Erichsen (1820-1869) and Trine Jensine Rian (1829-1884). Erichsen's father was a confectioner and died when Erichsen was very young.
Although at first he wanted to be a pianist, in 1886 he began studying law, then dropped out and attended a painting school run by Knud Bergslien, where he completed a course in arts and crafts. He later moved to Copenhagen, where he became a student of Christian Zahrtmann, who had a greater influence on his artistic development.
